The Nigerian Journal of Clinical Medicine is a medical journal published bi- annually by the Association of Resident Doctors of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. We aim to enrich the existing body of knowledge by publishing scientific reports on human subjects in the form of original articles, review articles, case reports and letters. The journal will cover technical and clinical studies related to medicine and dentistry in human well being including ethical issues. Articles on socioeconomic, political, and legal matters related to medical practice, conference and workshop reports, and medical news are also accepted. The editorial board carries out peer review by referees in appropriate specialties on all manuscripts submitted. Manuscripts from any part of the world will be considered for publication but preference would be given to manuscripts of interest to readers in the third world and Africa in particular. The journal was first published in 2008.

In the ever-evolving domain of medical research and publications, it is of utmost importance for medical journals to possess a clear and comprehensive editorial policy. This policy serves as a blueprint for authors, reviewers, and editors, ensuring the authenticity, excellence, and relevance of the published material. The editorial policy of NJCM has been meticulously crafted to uphold the highest standards of scientific rigor, ethical conduct, and transparency. Our objective is to foster a collaborative and inclusive environment that promotes the advancement of medical knowledge and contributes to the improvement of patient care. To achieve these goals, our editorial policy encompasses the following essential components.

The NJCM employs a stringent double-blind peer review process for all submitted manuscripts. This process entails the assessment of manuscripts by subject matter experts who evaluate the scientific validity, methodology, and significance of the research. Reviewers offer constructive feedback to authors, assisting them in enhancing their work. Through this peer review process, we guarantee the quality and reliability of the research published in our journal.

Adherence to ethical guidelines is a fundamental principle in NJCM, aligning with globally accepted standards such as the Declaration of Helsinki. It is imperative for authors, reviewers, and editors to uphold these ethical norms. Our policies prioritize the safeguarding of human and animal participants, the importance of informed consent, and the promotion of ethical research practices. Any form of plagiarism, data fabrication, or redundant publication is strongly discouraged.

Our editorial policy places great importance on maintaining transparency and objectivity throughout the publication process. To achieve this, all parties involved, including authors, reviewers, and editors, are obligated to disclose any potential conflicts of interest. These conflicts may arise from financial, professional, or personal relationships that have the potential to influence the research or editorial decisions. We take conflicts of interest seriously and handle them diligently to safeguard the integrity and impartiality of our publications. By adhering to this policy, we strive to ensure that our research maintains its credibility and is free from any undue influence that could compromise its content.

Upholding the utmost scientific rigor, we stress the significance of maintaining data integrity and reproducibility in research. Authors are urged to offer thorough and precise data, and to follow recommended guidelines for reporting research methodologies and outcomes. This unwavering commitment to research data and reproducibility guarantees that the conclusions put forth in our publication are dependable and aid in the progression of medical understanding.

In cases where errors, misconduct, or ethical issues are found in published articles, NJCM enforces a structured process for retracting, correcting, or expressing concerns. Our dedication to promptly addressing inaccuracies or ethical violations maintains transparency and accountability to our readers and the scientific community

Editorial autonomy is a core principle of NJCM, which guarantees that editorial decisions are free from external influences and are solely based on the scientific merit and ethical standards of the research. Our editorial team is devoted to conducting impartial and unbiased evaluations, without regard to the authors' affiliations, sources of funding, or any other potential biases.

The editorial framework of NJCM is constructed on the pillars of integrity, accountability, and ethical publishing practices. Our main focus is to create a space for top-tier research that pushes the boundaries of medical knowledge and addresses the needs of the scientific community. Through the adherence to our editorial policies, we aspire to uphold the trust and confidence of our readers, authors, and reviewers, ultimately aiding in the progress of medical science and patient care.

The standard bibliographic citation, which includes author attribution, date, and article title, must be included with all uses and/or copies of the content, in whole or in part, of NJCM(Nigerian Journal Of Clinical Medicine) journals. Permission from the relevant publisher may also be required for use.

When authors submit content to NJCM, they do so in good faith and with the understanding that nothing unlawful, defamatory, or violating anyone's copyright or other rights would be published on the NJCM website. NJCM reserves the right to delete any content that it deems inappropriate from the website and to refuse to post any content at all.

NJCM disclaims all liability for any kind of special, incidental, indirect, or consequential damages that may result from using the articles or other content obtained from the NJCM website, whether or not damage was anticipated and regardless of the basis for liability.

Although NJCM makes every effort to ensure that no false or deceptive information, opinion, or statement appears on this website, they would like to clarify that any information and viewpoints that appear in the articles and ads on this page are the responsibility of the relevant contributor or advertiser. The NJCM website is always being updated, thus both the website and these publications could change at any time.
A manuscript will be reviewed for possible publication with the understanding that it is being submitted to Nigerian Journal of Clinical Medicine alone at that point in time and has not been published anywhere, simultaneously submitted, or already accepted for publication elsewhere.

The journal expects that authors would authorize one of them to correspond with the Journal for all matters related to the manuscript.

All manuscripts received are duly acknowledged.

On submission, editors review all submitted manuscripts initially for suitability for formal review. Manuscripts with insufficient originality, serious scientific or technical flaws, or lack of a significant message are rejected before proceeding for formal peer-review.

Manuscripts that are unlikely to be of interest to the Nigerian Journal of Clinical Medicine readers are also liable to be rejected at this stage itself.

Manuscripts that are found suitable for publication in Nigerian Journal of Clinical Medicine are sent to two or more expert reviewers. During submission, the contributor is requested to provide names of two or three qualified reviewers who have had experience in the subject of the submitted manuscript, but this is not mandatory. The reviewers should not be affiliated with the same institutes as the contributor/s. However, the selection of these reviewers is at the sole discretion of the editor. The journal follows a double blind review process, wherein the reviewers and authors are unaware of each other’s identity. Every manuscript is also assigned to a member of the editorial team, who based on the comments from the reviewers takes a final decision on the manuscript. The comments and suggestions (acceptance/ rejection/ amendments in manuscript) received from reviewers are conveyed to the corresponding author. If required, the author is requested to provide a point by point response to reviewers’ comments and submit a revised version of the manuscript. This process is repeated till reviewers and editors are satisfied with the manuscript.

Manuscripts accepted for publication are copy edited for grammar, punctuation, print style, and format. Page proofs are sent to the corresponding author. The corresponding author is expected to return the corrected proofs within three days. It may not be possible to incorporate corrections received after that period. The whole process of submission of the manuscript to final decision and sending and receiving proofs is completed online. To achieve faster and greater dissemination of knowledge and information, the journal publishes articles online as ‘Ahead of Print’ immediately on acceptance.
The NJCM offers a great opportunity to reach a large pool of doctors and other health personnel in Nigeria and other subscribing countries with information on products and services. Request for adverts can be sent to the editor at lasuthjournal@yahoo.com

Guidelines for advertising

1. All advertisements are subject to approval of the publisher or editor. However, the publisher or the editor shall not unreasonably withhold such

approval.

2. Advertising is separate from content. Advertisers and sponsors should have no advance knowledge of our editorial content, nor should the editors shape content to accommodate advertising. Advertisers do not influence any of the publishers’ editorial decisions or advertising policies.

3. The appearance of an advertisement in the publisher’s journal is neither a guarantee nor an endorsement of the given product, service, company, or of

the claims made in such advertising by the publisher, society, or editorial partner.

4. Advertising that appears in the publisher’s journal will be clearly distinguishable from editorial content.

5. Publisher’s advertising sales representatives have no control over, or prior knowledge of, specific editorial content before it is published.

6. Advertisers have no control or influence over the results of searches a user may conduct on the publisher’s journal. Search results are based solely on the functionality available through our search software (e.g., keywords or natural language) and user-defined criteria (e.g., displaying most recent or most relevant items first).

7. In consideration of the publication of an advertisement, the advertiser and the agency, jointly and severally, agree to indemnify and hold harmless the publisher, its officers, agents, and employees against expenses (including legal fees) and losses resulting from the publication of the contents of the advertisement, including, without limitation, claims or suits for libel, violation of privacy, copyright infringement, or plagiarism.

8. All advertisements must clearly and prominently identify the advertiser by trademark or signature.

9. Any reference to the publisher or it products or services in advertisements, promotional material, or merchandising by the advertiser or the agency is subject to the publisher’s prior written approval for each such use.

10. The publisher is not responsible for any damages, including but not limited to actual, direct, incidental, or consequential damages, for errors in displaying an advertisement.

11. The publisher will not be bound by any condition, printed or otherwise, appearing on any insertion order or copy instructions when such conditions conflict with the conditions set forth in this policy statement.

12. In the event of nonpayment, the publisher reserves the right to hold the advertiser and/or its advertising agency liable for such monies as are due and payable to the publisher.

13. Any use of publication trademarks or copyrighted material for links to and from the website must be approved, in advance, by the publisher. Any such unauthorized linking is prohibited.

14. All advertisements for recruitment or employment must be nondiscriminatory and comply with all applicable laws and regulations. Advertisements of this nature that discriminate against applicants based on sex, age, race, religion, marital status, or physical handicap will not be accepted. Non Nigerian recruitment advertisers are required to confirm in writing that they are equal-opportunity employers.

15. Advertised products must be compliant with the regulations in the country where the advertisement will be seen.

16. The publisher does not release personally identifiable data on the users of our websites or email service to advertisers.

Authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works, and if the authors have used the work and/or words of others this must be appropriately cited or quoted. Plagiarism, data fabrication and image manipulation are not tolerated. Plagiarism is not acceptable in the Nigerian Journal of Clinical Medicine.

Plagiarism includes copying text, ideas, images, or data from another source, even from your publications, without giving any credit to the source. Reuse of text that is copied from another source must be between quotes and the original source must be cited. If a study's design or the manuscript's structure or language has been inspired by previous works, these works must be explicitly cited.

In all the article submissions to the current Nigerian Journal of Clinical Medical, the authors are obliged to send the results of the Plagiarism Control Result documents they have made with Turnitin, iThenticate, intihal.net or similar plagiarism control tools. Manuscripts with significant and extensive plagiarism will be rejected, and the author(s) institution may be notified.

If plagiarism is detected during the peer review process, the manuscript may be rejected. If plagiarism is detected after publication, we may publish a correction or retract the paper.
An author should not, in general, publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.
1. Considering the significance of confidentiality in the scientific publication process, COPE(Committee On Publication Ethics) feels that information exchanges between EICs(Editors in Chief) should only occur when the disclosing EIC considers it essential to carrying out their duty to prevent and address suspected research misconduct.

2. EICs should follow COPE guidelines and flowcharts for all first inquiries into suspected cases, and they should refrain from exchanging information unless there is a solid indication of a problem that extends beyond a single journal. Sharing information should only occur when the author does not respond, if their response is insufficient, or when it is believed that multiple journals are impacted.

3. Should information sharing be required, it should only be disclosed to EICs that the disclosing EIC thinks might have relevant information for the case, and it should only be shared as much as is necessary.

4. Information exchanged should be limited to factual information only; speculation, inference, and conjecture should be avoided. It is advised that the disclosing EIC include a disclaimer stating that the information is only meant to notify other EICs in the event that they have any additional information that could help with this case's handling, possibly even clearing the implicated investigator or author.

5. Communications ought to be conducted in a way that maximizes confidentiality preservation. Email is a suitable means of communication, but because face-to-face and phone talks between EICs in various time zones can be challenging, it is important for EICs to make sure the receivers are aware of the sensitive nature of the disclosure. Adding the word "confidential" to the subject line of emails and attaching a rider or disclaimer stating that the message should be regarded as such and should not be transmitted past the original circulation list without authorization are two examples of such actions.

6. All journals should make it explicit in their Guidelines for Authors that material will be handled in confidentiality aside from the needs of review AND any potential misconduct investigation, in order to warn authors about the possibility of such information sharing.

It is a general principle of scholarly communication of journal that the editor of a publication journal is only responsible for deciding that which articles submitted to the journal shall be published within the provided fields of journal. In making this decision the editor is guided by policies of the journal's board member and constrained by such legal requirements in force regarding libel, copyright infringement and plagiarism. Result of this principle is the importance of the scholarly archive as a permanent, historic record of the transactions of scholarship. Editor need to ensure that articles which have been published shall remain extant, exact and unaltered as far as is possible. However, in the rare circumstances in which an article is published that must later be retracted or even removed from the journal. Such actions must not be undertaken lightly and can only occur under exceptional circumstances. In all cases, our official archives will be available.

The process to withdrawing a published article from the journal database is violating the journal principle and the copyright policy that author signed copyright form before the publication of article in the journal database. Journal adopted following protocols for withdrawing article (s):

1. The journal allows only article to be withdrawn if it represent early versions of articles and sometimes contain errors, or may have been accidentally submitted twice.

2. Article is withdrawn from the journal means that article (pdf and html) will be removed from journal database only. Neither journal nor publication house will be responsible for other related caches.

3. After withdrawal, article will not be reconsidered further for republication in the journal. Corresponding author need to submit a withdrawal application to withdraw his/her article from journal database.

Article Withdrawal
The journal allows only article to be withdrawal if it represent early versions of articles and sometimes contain errors, or may have been accidentally submitted twice. Occasionally, but less frequently, the articles may represent violation of professional ethical codes, such as multiple submission, bogus claims of authorship, plagiarism, fraudulent use of data or the like. Articles in Journal (articles that have been accepted for publication but have not been formally published and will not yet have the complete volume/issue/page information) that include errors, or are discovered to be accidental duplicates of other published article's, or are determined to violate our journal publishing ethics guidelines in the view of the editors (such as multiple submission, bogus claims of authorship, plagiarism, fraudulent use of data or the like), may be "Withdrawn" from Journal. Withdrawn means that the article content (HTML and PDF) is removed and replaced with a HTML page and PDF simply stating that the article has been withdrawn according to the journal Policy on Article in Press Withdrawal with a link to the current policy document.

Article Retraction:

Violations of professional ethical codes, such as multiple submission, bogus claims of authorship, plagiarism, fraudulent use of data or the like is liable for article retraction. Occasionally a retraction will be used to correct errors in submission or publication. The retraction of an article by its authors or the editor will be done under the advice of members of the scholarly community or journal board members.

Standards for dealing with retractions have been developed by a number of library and scholarly bodies, and from all of them best practice is adopted for article retraction by journal:

1. A retraction note titled "Retraction: [article title]" signed by the authors
and/or the editor is published in the paginated part of a subsequent issue of

the journal and listed in the contents list.

2. In the electronic version, a link is made to the original article.

3. The online article is preceded by a screen containing the retraction note. It is to this screen that the link resolves; the reader can then proceed to the article itself.

4. The original article is retained unchanged save for a watermark on the .pdf indicating on each page that it is "retracted." The HTML version of the document is removed.

Article Removal: Legal Limitations:

In an extremely limited number of cases, it may be necessary to remove an article from the online database. This will only occur where the article is clearly defamatory, or infringes others' legal rights, or where the article is, or we have good reason to expect it and will be the subject to the court order, or where the article, if acted upon, might pose a serious health risk. In these circumstances, while the metadata (Title and Authors) will be retained, the text will be replaced with a screen indicating the article has been removed for legal reasons.

Article Replacement

The authors of the original article may wish to retract the flawed original and replace it with a corrected version due to any serious health risk or violating the scholar publication standards worldwide. In these circumstances the procedures for retraction will be followed with the difference that the database retraction notice will publish a link to the corrected re-published article and a history of the document.
Note: All the legal rights are under the chief editor and managing editor of the journal bodies. The final decision on the article withdrawal/retraction/removal/replacement is made by the journal bodies only. Author's can send their suggestions to the Nigerian Journal of Clinical Medicine editor and the board members would keep those suggestions in mind while taking the last decision
